The pretty Andalucian town of Nerja is located on the southernmost coast of Spain, less than an hours drive from Malaga airport. The narrow winding streets of the old town are home to many tapas bars (see Old Town Tapas Trail), restaurants and small shops and lead down to the renowned Balcon de Europa with its panoramic coastal views towards Africa. Benefiting from one of the best climates in Europe, enjoying on average more than 300 days of sunshine a year and with mild winter temperatures, Nerja is truly a year round holiday destination. 

Beaches

Despite its small size, Nerja is surrounded by miles of sandy beaches, including the famous Burriana beach, which has every facility, including sunbeds, beach restaurants, bars and watersports hire. Even at the height of summer there is room for everyone and you will still be able to find a peaceful cove hidden away, all within walking distance of the town centre.

Eating and Drinking

During the day the place to go is to one of the many Chiringuitos (beach restaurants) that line Burriana and the other bigger beaches in Nerja. Here most dishes are available including the local speciality of sardines cooked on the spit over an open fire, and giant paellas cooked on a wood-fired barbeque.

At night the town centre has many bars and restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. As well as the many Spanish places, there is a whole range of international bars and restaurants open until the small hours.

Nearby Attractions

The famous caves of Nerja are located just outside the town next door to the small village of Maro. Further inland is the whitewashed hillside town of Frigliana, with narrow cobbled streets and panoramic views down to the coast. Less than two hours drive inland is Granada, home to the moorish palace the Alhambra and next door to the Sierra Nevada ski resort. In the winter you can ski one day and enjoy the sun on the beach the next. The glamour of Marbella and the big yachts of Puerto Banus are an hour and a half drive away, whilst further down the coast you can visit the British outpost of Gibraltar, where you can tour the rock, see the Barbary Apes and enjoy tax-free shopping.

Fiestas & Parades

A month without a fiesta or a procession is a very long month indeed in Nerja, starting with Three Kings in January, Carnival in February, Semana Santa at Easter, San Isidro in May, San Juan at midsummer in June, Virgen del Carmen in July, Feria week in October and then Christmas Eve and New Years Eve fiestas on the Balcon.

Getting To Nerja

Malaga airport is less than an hours drive from Nerja and has flights to the whole of Europe, including all the major airports in the UK. You can hire a car at the airport or take a taxi.
